I have expected... Do I have to run away?

P. Jacek Dembek, CSsRReading this part of the Gospel about the road to Emmaus (Lk 24:13-35), I am not the only one thinking: how blind the disciples were, how foolish they were, how stupid they were... Because Jesus had been teaching them, explaining the Scripture, saying them more times that he would have to suffer, to die, and then that he would be risen... Despite all that, the disciples are able to say only: "We expected, we were hoping...," and they run away.

Simeon's eyes

P. Stanislav Přibyl, CSsRMost Christians celebrate the feast of the Presentation of Christ in the Temple on February 2. This day we read a passage from the Holy Gospel according to St Luke (2, 22-38).
We can meet Jesus with Mary and Joseph and Simeon and Anna as well.

When I look out the window of my flat, I can see Prague and the whole of the Archbishopric

Fr Stanislav Přibyl, C.Ss.R.This is not the first time that a discussion with the Archbishop of Prague, Miloslav Vlk, has made it on to the pages of this magazine. It has however been a few years since we last talked to him. Times change, people get older and mature further, and opinions develop, as do new problems, pleasures and impulses. So it was about time that we had another talk with the Cardinal, and not just about Svatá Hora. We also talked about the current challenges and problems of the Church in Prague and its surroundings and about what's new. It was also time to take a look backwards at past achievements.

Seven perspectives on wondrous Svatá Hora

Fr Stanislav Přibyl, C.Ss.R.In the sequence of odd numbers, seven follows five. In order to follow the pattern set in previous issues of the magazine, I wanted to use the number seven in the title of this article. Initially, this seemed beyond me. Finally, however, I hope I can say that form has not come at the expense of content.

Real May Weather

Pavel ŠmolíkI am going to early Mass and on the way get snow in my shoes several times. This is certainly my fault, as I am not wearing sensible shoes and it is winter…

Repairs to Svatá Hora

Fr Stanislav Přibyl, C.Ss.R.In 2006 we will effect further repairs to and maintenance of  Svatá Hora.

Boring celebrations

Pavel ŠmolíkYou would no doubt say too that some celebrations can be a necessary evil rather than a pleasure, even if good food, liquid refreshment or other interesting inducements do await. It is after all bothersome to have to depart from one's routine in order to procure for the object of the celebration some gift or other, which costs money but more importantly much effort in the choosing. Of course we could use the time-honoured approach taken to so-called pilgrimage gifts, according to which the recipient must present a gift to someone else within a week of receiving his or her own gift...

Amongst Olympians

An early winter morning in Setriere-Borgata, Italy. The Olympic world is waking up to another day, which like every other day of the XX. Winter Olympics will be governed by the Olympic spirit, bringing peace, friendship and hope to all the nations of the earth.

Standing in a garden with a butterfly in my hand is for me a quicker path to divine wisdom than reading theological tracts…

Fr Stanislav Přibyl, C.Ss.R.Father Josef Michalčík, CSsR, was ordained a priest in 1997. Immediately after his ordination, he left Slovakia for the Czech Republic to perform community service at Svatá Hora. But he remained in the Czech Republic. First, as chaplain of Svatá Hora, and later as rector of the parish in Králíky, a place of pilgrimage. In 2002 he became a member of the Czech province of the Redemptorists and today he is deputy to the provincial Superior. During one of his visits to Svatá Hora, I asked him the following questions, giving rise to this conversation...
