The Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer (the Redemptorists)
is a religious order founded in 1732 by the priest and legal scholar St Alfonso of Liguori as a reaction to the physical and intellectual squalor he found in the countryside around Naples. After the death of its founder (in 1787), the efforts of the Czech-born St Klement Marie Hofbauer saw the Order spread across the Alps. As well as Italy, the Redemptorists were also active in Poland, Austria, Bavaria and Switzerland. In what was an unpropitious age, Hofbauer was however unable to found an enduring monastery. It was only after his death (in 1820) that the Redemptorists established a lasting presence in Vienna, and from here they gradually spread out, initially throughout Europe and then throughout the United States. Today Redemptorists work on all five continents. This holy Order has more than 5,000 members. The Redemptorists work predominantly consists of popular missions. Popular missions involve work over several days in a given parish. Redemptorists also work in places of pilgrimage, and appear on television and radio, and have their own printing presses. There are at present more than 20 members of the Congregation in the Czech Republic. There are four centres, of which three are well-known places of Marian pilgrimage (Svatá Hora, Králíky and Frýdek). The fourth centre is on the site of the house where St Klement Marie Hofbauer was born. Redemptorists in the Czech Republic working on popular missions also work at the same time as parish priests. Some of this holy Order's Saints are Czechs. St Klement Maria Hofbauer (1751-1820) was born in Tasovice u Znojma, St Jan Neumann (1811-1860), who was the fourth Bishop of Philadelphia in the US, was born in Prachatice, and the Blessed Metoděj Dominik Trčka (1886-1959), martyred in a Communist prison, was born in Frýdlant nad Ostravicí.
