The Svatá Hora Church Choir
The Svatá Hora Church Choir is currently composed of 18 permanent members (six sopranos, six altos, two tenors and two basses) of all ages and different professional or educational backgrounds. This so-called "Large Choir" sings predominantly during Mass. It takes part in concerts only exceptionally (apart from the traditional Christmas and Easter concerts), the principal reason for this being that the Choir regularly sings at Sunday Masses. Apart from the Large Choir, there is also a group of enthusiasts who constitute the "Small Choir." This is a chamber choir which recruits its members from the Large Choir. This chamber vocal ensemble gives predominantly concert performances (mainly taking part in afternoon concerts at the regular Advent and Lent spiritual retreats, performing during guest appearances in neighbouring parishes, and so on). However the Small Choir also sings during Mass at Svatá Hora. Since 2001 both choirs have been led by Svatá Hora's choirmaster, Pavel Šmolík, when he took over from Father Karl Bříza.
Repertory
The "Large Choir" regularly takes part in Sunday Mass at 9am. They may sing a Proprium (by K. Bříza, J. Bříza or St. Jelínek) and sacred Marian works, as well other miscellaneous liturgical pieces dating from the Baroque to the present day, and of course it also participates in popular Ordinaria (by Bříza, Eben and Olejník). But they do more. During the most significant periods of the liturgical calendar (Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter) and on various Marian festivals (the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Coronation) they sing very complex music, often with instrumental accompaniment. This allows Svatá Hora to offer a wide choice of Masses, which is why it is possible to offer figural music at one of the Masses on a major feast day. From past performances we can cite the example of Charles Gounod's Messe solennelle, which was performed at the Feast of the Coronation in 2003 (you may listen to an excerpt from a recording of this performance on this web site).
In the ordinary course of events it is not possible to prepare more such complex pieces with two hours of rehearsal a week. For this reason the choir twice a year goes on a working retreat lasting several days, where it is possible for them to work intensively on adding more complex pieces to their repertory."The Small Choir", as has been said, devotes itself principally to a more complex repertory in terms of the length of time needed to study a piece, a repertory which is inaccessible to the Large Choir for reasons of time. Recently the Small Choir performed Palestrina's Stabat Mater at the Lent spiritual retreat in 2003, and Bach's cantata "Nun komm, der Heiden Heiland", which was sung at the Advent spiritual retreat in the same year.
Discography
A discography already numbering five successful CDs is further testament to the Choirs' activities. Their first CD "Hudba na Svaté Hoře" ("Music at Svatá Hora") and their second "Dobrý den vinšujem tobě, Maria" ("We bid you good day, Mary") were recorded by the Choir under the leadership of Father Karl Bříza, who is of course already widely known for his musical activities. Their next CD "F. X. Thuri - Křížová cesta svatohorská" ("F. X. Thuri - The Svatá Hora Stations of the Cross") was recorded alongside guest singers under the baton of the composer himself, František Xaver Thuri. The fourth CD "Skladby Karla Břízy - I" ("Compositions of Karel Bříza - I"), which contains the more well-known and less well-known compositions of Father Karel Bříza, was recorded in the autumn of 2003, and was released by the Carmelite publishing house in August 2004. The most recent CD is entitled "Mariánské zpěvy ze Svaté Hory" ("Marian Song from Svatá Hora"). This recording was made in November 2004 and released in April 2005, once again by the Carmelite publishing house. This recording contains Marian songs from the Baroque era and songs from Svatá Hora, including the famous Svatá Hora Zdrávas (Hail Mary) and various compositions by Svatá Hora's priests.
