New Organ
Svatá Hora did, does and we hope will always have exceptional cultural as well as religious significance. Ever since the Jesuits first came to Svatá Hora in the mid-17th century, the place has been a centre for first-rate music-making. This is still the case today, even if the quality of music-making in Svatá Hora has been stagnating somewhat since the mid-20th century. We would like Svatá Hora to regain its reputation for music and culture. There are two venues for celebrating Mass in Svatá Hora. Firstly, there is the Basilica, and then there is the so-called Coronation Altar, which is located in the three outdoor chapels situated to the east wing of the Basilica. We use the outdoor chapels mainly in the summer, when the high volume of pilgrims cannot be accommodated in the Basilica. It would be convenient if we had two organs: one for the Basilica and one for use in the outdoor chapels. Unfortunately we do not. In Svatá Hora there is one poor-quality pipe organ in the Basilica. For Mass in the outdoor chapels a portable instrument lent by Dr Jaroslav Tůma is currently used. The organ in the Basilica dates from 1948, thus from the time organ playing went into decline. This decline left many and disparate marks on our instrument. For the most part inappropriate techniques were used in repairing the organ. In an attempt to save space in the choir, a section of the organ was relocated to under the roof of the Basilica, where fluctuations in temperature have a negative effect. What is more, alterations made to the instrument for aesthetic reasons have also not done it any favours, and, finally, the state of the technical parts of the organ is alarming. In short, we are the proprietors of an instrument of practically limitless artistic value which is just about to stop functioning, and although repairs have provided a temporary solution, they have in no way dealt with the source of the organ's problems, which from the outset have been constituted by faulty repair-work and non-expert workmanship. We were obliged to think about whether to invest 5 million CZK in a reconstructing the old organ, or whether to construct a new organ, which would cost approximately twice as much. We have decided on the second option - we will construct a new organ. This is a demanding undertaking, requiring the highly accomplished artisanal skills of a well-known organ-maker and an aesthetically appropriate instrument for the Basilica, all at an affordable price of course. We have approached the organ builder Vladimír Šlajch to produce a design for Svatá Hora's new organ. Mr Šlajch is currently one of the most respected organ builders in the Czech Republic, and his skills are also much sought after abroad. Testament to this is provided by the many quality instruments built by him both in the Czech Republic and abroad. Mr Šlajch's model of an instrument for the Basilica is shown in the accompanying picture. Along with the model of the bigger organ for the Basilica, the picture also shows a smaller transportable instrument for use in the outside chapels, which we would also like to have built at some point in the future. We are however not in a position to realise such a demanding project in circumstances where Svatá Hora is barely able to cover its day-to-day running costs. In the past, a little land and some farms were attached to Svatá Hora, but this is not longer the case, as no agreement has been reached between the Church and the state on restitution. The whole complex is more or less completely kept afloat by donations from private individuals or companies. So we have no option but to turn to you. The Svatá Hora Foundation, an association of the friends of Svatá Hora, has assumed responsibility for investing in a new organ. To this end, we are collecting donations in account number 19 - 523 967 309/0800 at Česká Spořitelna in Příbram. We would like to thank you in advance for any donation you care to make and point out that any donation you do make is tax-deductible.
