Real May Weather

Pavel ŠmolíkI am going to early Mass and on the way get snow in my shoes several times. This is certainly my fault, as I am not wearing sensible shoes and it is winter…

The high-point of my morning walk is slipping down the steps on my back from the Basilica to the cloisters after six o'clock Mass. I can hardly stand up from the organ after playing at seven o'clock Mass - a great start to the day. When I am on my way to the next Mass, I can hear some ladies saying that there probably won't be many people, which is no surprise given weather like this...Several weeks later the snow is melting. There is water and slush everywhere, but I tell myself that at least I am no longer likely to fall over. I've got my sensible shoes now, which I have to clean after each outing. Needs must... After Mass I hear a young married couple complain about the slush. "Snow would be better, look at this mess..."In May I have enough on my plate preparing the music for the Coronation. That is maybe why I am only managing to get things done at the last minute. I seem to have particular trouble fitting in my regular jobs. I end up running to the May devotions and barely make it. The light spring rain is soaking me. Who would think to go out in the rain without an umbrella? But if you're in a hurry... And what is going on in the church? The crowd streams towards me (they aren't staying for the May devotions: their bus is leaving, there's a film on TV, we just don't have time to kiss the statue..) and they're analysing the weather: "It's like April! This isn't May weather. Chance would be a fine thing...!" Nor does real May weather materialise for the Pilgrims' Festival. It's pouring down all day, and the evening vigil will take place by the Coronation Altar. There aren't many people. It also rains during the Mass, and so we doubt whether candles will be an option during the procession. The procession is surely going to be damp. But during the procession not a single drop of rain falls. However, it does start to pour down immediately afterwards. This time I am deaf to the others' thoughts on the weather. Even with the downpour it is perhaps the best pilgrimage I have ever experienced. And so I ask myself, what exactly do the words "May weather" actually mean?
