Most Christians celebrate the feast of the Presentation of Christ in the Temple on February 2. This day we read a passage from the Holy Gospel according to St Luke (2, 22-38).
We can meet Jesus with Mary and Joseph and Simeon and Anna as well.
Of course, Jesus is in the centre of the story. He should have been carried into the Temple according to Moses Law, and consecrated to God.
On this occasion, Mary met two old people: an old man Simeon and 84 years old prophet Anna. Both were waiting for Jesus for a long time. Simeon said on this occasion: "Now, Lord, you have kept your promise, and you may let your servant go in peace. With my own eyes I have seen your salvation" (Lk 2, 29-30). He said that, because "the Holy Spirit was with him and had assured him that he would not die before he had seen the Lord's promised Messiah" (Lk 2, 26).
When we see this old holy man, we could think about the value of aged people. At present, only that who can produce something has a value. Old people are not often useful, because they produce less or nothing.
We can ask: Why the Evangelist Luke does write about Simeon? What is the message of Mary's meeting him? I am convinced that it is because Simeon saw a new horizon of his life. At the end of his life, he looked at Jesus.
Sometimes we can meet old people who are experienced, who experienced something interesting, and they want, and can tell us about it. But the experience of seeing the last horizon before the death - that is something completely different. That is a new dimension of their life.
I am sure that it is something you cannot read about in books. You can read about it only in the eyes of old people. It is a new hope, a new reason for life, a new occasion to be happy. We ask: what causes this new hope, new desire to live, what affects this mysterious shine of old people's eyes? It is not the look back at their past life but the look into a new future. For us, Christians, this future is Christ, because Jesus is somebody who lives forever.
Let us look in the eyes of Simeon today, and do not be afraid of our future. We are in the hands of God who was born as Jesus for us, and who became the joy for old Simeon and for us all as well.
